Hand-Dyed Hammocks by Moonbeam Hammocks
Every month we feature a unique and innovative Hammock Manufacture. Recently we had the pleasure of interviewing Dan Tutor founder of Moonbeam Hammocks.
What is your name?
What is your company name?
What made you want to start a hammock company?
In my 20s I backpacked all over the world. I would buy local hammocks whenever one caught my eye. Not only did they make great souvenirs, I could string one up almost anywhere and relax where furniture was scarce. I’ve slept in hammocks everywhere from the deck of a cargo boat on the Amazon River, to remote beaches in Thailand and Maine, USA. Eventually, I had a collection of hammocks from all the places I had traveled.
Unfortunately, I lost all my hammocks one night at Electric Forest 2014 (these things happen). As a result, I went shopping for a new hammock.
I was disappointed with the colors and patterns available in my price range, so my wife and I began experimenting with sewing and hand-dying ripstop nylon hammocks. We have been making and testing prototypes and refining our design and dye technique for over a year, and Moonbeam Hammocks are the result of this journey.
How is your hammock company different than other hammock companies like ENO?
Materials: We source American-made parachute nylon because we know it is produced under tighter environmental regulations and with better conditions and wages for workers than if it was made in Indonesia or China.
Many nylon hammock companies sell hammocks made in Indonesian and Chinese factories. We hand-make our hammocks in Maine, USA. It is our goal to make the Moonbeam workshop 100% solar powered by 2018. Design: Each Moonbeam Adventure Hammock is made from a single sheet of 64″ x 120″ parachute nylon. This seamless design eliminates tension lines and weak spots along internal seams common in panel hammocks. Moonbeam Hammocks weigh only 12 ounces, including straps.
What is your favorite thing about the hammocks you make?
Colors! Every Moonbeam Hammock is hand dip-dyed in 2 to 4 of our specially formulated colors. The resulting hammock is beautiful and totally unique. Even our straps are hand-dyed to match. The colors! I love the way the hammocks light up in the sunlight. I have three outside my window right now blowing in the breeze and they look gorgeous.
Are your hammocks made for indoors or outdoors?
What accessories do your hammocks come with?
The basic Moonbeam Hammock comes with straps and attached stuff sack with stash pocket. The special edition comes with our hang-easy daisy chains and Moonbeam Micro Carabiners.
How heavy are your hammocks and how much weight can they hold?
Moonbeam Hammocks weigh 12 ounces – straps included. They can hold at least 350 pounds.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
